Birth doula & support

Support to make your birth a day to remember – for all the right reasons

Preparing to welcome your baby can feel overwhelming.

It should be a time of joy. A time where you feel supported by those around you. A time you look forward to, knowing that you have everything you need to feel confident and empowered to give birth on your own terms.

Yet too often, it is a time of overwhelm. Of wondering how you are going to get through your birth. Of wondering whether your birth preferences will be respected. Of wondering if you are ‘enough’.

And all you want is someone to tell you that everything will be ok. That you’ve got this. You want the ‘village’ without all the unwanted advice!

What if the village did exist?

The one that is there to lift you up, to lift you up, to hold space for you. The village that supports you, provides you information and education so you can make the best decisions for yourself and your baby.

What if you had someone holding your hand (metaphorically or literally if you need it) so you can walk your journey through pregnancy and birth with confidence.

What if you had your own birth coach – someone who is there supporting you physically, emotionally and mentally. Someone who holds space for you. Someone who understands the power of birth and wants you to have a birth that you remember for the rest of your life – for all the right reasons.

I’m not there to replace your birth partner. I am there to support you both. With experience in relaxation and hypnobirthing, acupressure for pregnancy and birth, Spinning Babies and Optimal Maternal Positioning, and rebozo techniques I have a range of ways to help you feel calm, relaxed and comfortable during labour.

Five

Postpartum Support

I offer 1- 2 hours immediate postpartum support and one visit once your baby arrives home to help you find ways to boost your oxytocin, trust your intuition and start your journey into parenthood feeling confident. This session also gives us a chance to debrief, and celebrate, your birth.

Are you ready to find your birth bestie?

I’ve been where you are…

I’m a mum of three and each of my births were entirely different to the others. One was difficult and traumatic, the others were inspiring, empowering and transformational!

I learnt so much through each of these experiences. I learnt about myself. I learnt how powerful birth can be and the lasting impact it can have. One of the biggest lessons birth taught me is that having the right people around can make all the difference.

I’ve had times during my births where I felt let down by those around me. Pressured into decisions and options I didn’t want.

I’ve also been surrounded by those that were there to support me – physically, emotionally and mentally. Those that were there to hold space for me and those who respected my decisions – even when they didn’t agree with the decisions. And this is what I now offer to you.

I’m a Hypnobirthing Australia™ practitioner (for the Positive Birth, Hypnobubs and Positive Caesarean courses), a pre- and postnatal coach, postpartum doula, VBAC educator and am currently undertaking further doula studies with the Doula Training Academy. I’m also a serial learner – I love a workshop! Through this I bring Spinning Babies and Optimal Maternal Positioning techniques, acupressure for labour and birth, rebozo techniques, VBAC specific education and more.

Are there any benefits of having a doula?

Yes! A recent Cochrane Review found that women who received continuous labour support were

  • more likely to give birth spontaneously (vaginal, non-instrumental birth)
  • less likely to use pain relief
  • less likely to have a caesarean birth
  • to have shorter labours
  • more likely to be satisfied with their birth experience

In fact Dr. John H Kennell MD says that ‘If a doula were a drug, it would be unethical not to use it.’

What is a doula?

As your doula I will be a part of your birth support team. I will be there to support you physically and emotionally during your labour and birth – whatever your birth looks like.

Are you there instead of my partner? Will you 'get in the way' of my partner?

No. I am not there to replace your birth partner, nor to get in their way. I am there to support your birth partner, as well as you. I will give them the tools they need to feel confident to support you.

I will be there if your partner needs a break, so that you always have a familiar face.

It’s important for me that your partner is on board with my presence at your birth, so I ask that you include your partner in at least one of our prenatal meetings. This way we can talk through any fears or reservations they may have and discuss how you both see my role in your labour and birth.

What types of births do you support?

I will be there to support you regardless of the type of birth you are planning or the type of birth you end up having. Having experienced both caesarean and vaginal births, medicated and drug-free births, I know that how you feel about your birth is more important than where or how your baby enters the world.

I support births at home, at birth centres, at private and public hospitals.

How do I know you are the right doula for me?

Surrounding yourself with the right team is critical during your birth. You need to find someone you are comfortable with, someone who makes you feel calm and at ease. Someone who will provide you with the information and education you need and won’t judge your choices. You need a doula who is by your side and on your side when you need it.

Want to make sure I am the right doula for you? I offer a free no-obligation 60 minute ‘coffee catch up’. During this session you can ask any and all of the questions you have, to help you decide if I am the right fit for you and to help me determine if you are the right fit for me. This is a great chance for your partner to meet me and to help answer any questions or resolve any fears or reservations either of you have.

How does the support during my birth work?

I will be on call for you from 38 – 42 weeks.

During your labour, if I have been supporting you for 15 hours or more, I will call on my back up doula so that you always have a familiar face and continuity of support.

Do you replace a midwife?

No. A doula does not provide the same care as, nor replace, your midwife. A doula does not provide any medical care. As your doula I will be there to support you physically and emotionally but I will not be able to peform any medical procedures nor provide medical advice.

How does the payment work?

A 50% deposit is required at the time of booking my services as once you book I will decline any other bookings around the same due date as your own. The final balance is payable at least 4 weeks prior to your due date.

Payment plans are available – please contact me for more information.
